WHAT WE DO ON THE DAY WITHOUT ANY THOUGHTS ABOUT RESURRECTION

WHAT WE DO ON THE DAY

WITHOUT ANY THOUGHTS ABOUT RESURRECTION

While Karen assembles the railing

for the deck, I’m reading through Machado’s

poems looking for walking lines

making my sign for today’s

march led by LatinXPoder.

It is Saturday, Easter people,

after Good Friday, the long day

coloring with Marks-a-lot

on cardboard. Taking green pen

in hand I draw a large C beginning

Caminante, its implications

unsettling me, walker, camino--

way-path all the way to El Señor.

Caminante makes me dizzy

saying it. Caminantes somos

y en el camino andamos. Taking

a black pen I outline the green

letters watching the words pop,

daemon-like—se hace camino

al andar. The way Karen

connects railing rods

is how one makes this road

by walking. No where

do I protest deportations

with the word. At the bottom

where I sign my name in red,

alongside the date 20 April 2025,

two words: Turtle Island

state my belief. Natural Boundaries,

not political ones. Two other groups,

Between the Ridges and YIRN,

Yakima Immigration Response Network,

guide me. Our friend who claimed

asylum years ago will sit

at our table on Easter, terrified.

She is a source of my faith

and I am making this sign

in her name. It is spring.

We are surrounded by ice

and she is the mother of Jesus.
